Sciatica

Categories

Sciatica is a complex problem with a variety of symptoms with specialised treatments dependant on the cause of your pain. The pain can originate anywhere along the Sciatic nerve, this is a large nerve that comes from the lumbosacral plexus (a bundle of nerves coming directly out of the spinal cord).

When pain occurs, usually it is from a ‘pinching’or ‘pulling’ of the nerve through one of the tunnels it runs through. Because nerves are a delicate structure this pulling and pinching causes trauma to the nerve resulting in pain.

The pain is often described as:

  • Burning
  • Stabbing
  • Shooting
  • Electric
  • Tight
  • Toothache
  • Tingling / Pins and needles
  • Numbness

A diagnosis of Sciatica is usually based on your description of symptoms and from testing to the nerves in your legs and hips; as well as any previous back injuries and activities.

Treatment varies according to the cause and severity of your pain. This can range from resolving the cause of the pain or in some cases is limited to managing your symptoms. Sometimes simple stretches and exercises is enough and in other cases more complex treatment is required.
